How to Create a Temporary Tattoo Using Paper
Making a temporary tattoo at home is simple and fun. You only need a few basic things that you probably already have. If you have ever wanted to see how a drawing would look on your skin, a temporary tattoo is a great way to try it out. People of all ages can make their own tattoos using just paper, water, and perfume. Keep reading to learn how to do it step by step!
Step 1: Purchase water slide paper
Most temporary tattoos are made using water slide paper, which helps the tattoo stick to the skin and last longer. You can buy water slide paper from a craft store or online. If you don’t have water slide paper, you can also use regular printing paper.
Step 2: Find a design online or draw your own.
Look for a cool tattoo design online by searching for “tattoo designs” or create your own using Photoshop or a drawing app. Choose a design that is special to you, such as a meaningful symbol, a favorite character, or a drawing of an animal.

Step 3: Print your chosen design.
Before printing your tattoo, make sure to flip the image, especially if it has words. This is important because the design will appear mirrored when applied to your skin. You can print in color, but black ink usually looks the best. Choose the size you want—if you are making multiple tattoos, smaller sizes work better.
Step 4: Cut out your design.
When cutting out your tattoo, leave about a ½ inch border around the edges. Avoid cutting too close to the design, as this can make it harder to apply.
Step 5: Spray your design with perfume.
Spray both the front and back of the paper with a scented perfume of your choice. Be sure to apply a generous amount so the paper gets fully covered.
Step 6: Place the design in hot water and let it soak for three minutes.
Fill a small bowl or sink with hot water. Carefully place your printed tattoo on top of the water. Gently press it down so it sinks below the surface.
Step 7: Let the paper sit in the water for three minutes.
Set a timer to keep track of how long the paper soaks. Once it has finished soaking, take it out of the water and spray it with perfume again.
Step 8: Press the tattoo onto your skin.
Choose the spot where you want your tattoo, like your wrist or arm. Spray the side of the paper that will touch your skin with perfume. Then, place the inked side of the paper face down on your skin and spray it with perfume once more.
Step 9: Let the tattoo set on your skin for seven minutes.
When the time is up, carefully remove the paper. Start peeling it slowly from the edges. If there is any paper left on your skin, rinse it off with water instead of rubbing, as rubbing may ruin the tattoo.
Step 10: Lightly dab the tattoo with a towel to dry it.
Now you have a brand-new, waterproof temporary tattoo! It can last up to a month. If you ever want to remove it, simply use rubbing alcohol to wash it off.
Step 11: Let the Perfume Dry
After spraying the paper with perfume, let it sit for a few minutes to dry. This allows the ink to absorb the perfume properly, which helps the tattoo transfer smoothly onto your skin.
Step 12: Press the Tattoo Onto Your Skin
Choose where you want to place the tattoo and press the paper firmly onto your skin. Hold it in place for at least 30 seconds. You can also use a damp cloth or sponge to press down gently, ensuring the design sticks properly.
Step 13: Remove the Paper and Let It Dry
Slowly peel off the paper from your skin. If the tattoo hasn’t fully transferred, press it down again for a few more seconds. Once applied, let the tattoo air dry completely before touching or washing it.
